Parami – Effort

To better understand the term “effort” in context of the Paramis we can refer to the buddhist word “virya” translating to energy, vigor or heroic effort. As I have been learning about the Parami “effort” I noticed a contrast to the other more gracious concepts of meditation focusing on noticing or observing experiences in the present. This led me to consider the balance between accepting ourselves as we are versus having the drive to change. Each of us have our own inescapable experiences of alternating between failure and effort, and I find exploring these concepts requires a tremendous amount of courage or even energy. On Thursday, I’d like to talk more about what this balance looks like for us in a culture where “effort” might be communicated differently than what is a helpful counterbalance to acceptance. Hope to see you there. Take care.
