This week we are going to explore the quality of the third Brahma Vihara – Sympathetic Joy (sometimes referred to as Appreciative Joy). This quality arises when Metta is turned towards good fortune. It is said that of all the Brahma Viharas, this is the hardest to develop.
Sympathetic Joy is not about finding happiness nor is it about learning to accept whatever goodness you have in your own life (although both of these capacities tend to show up when Sympathetic Joy arises). The heart’s joy is not a conditional. It is not based on things going a certain way, life going smoothly or one being in a “good mood”. Sympathetic Joy is far more freeing.
