Third Precept – Sexual Misconduct

Our self-led Sangha (we miss you Tuere) continues.  Each week we begin at 6:45 PM and are reading out loud the topic’s essay by Thich Nhat Hanh, then sitting for 30 minutes. Next week’s discussion will be on the third precept. Here’s how by frames it:

Aware of the suffering caused by sexual misconduct, I vow to cultivate responsibility and learn ways to protect the safety and integrity of individuals, couples, families and society. I am determined not to engage in sexual relations without love and a long-term commitment. To preserve the happiness of myself and others., I am determined to respect my commitments and the commitments of others. I will do everything in my power to protect children from sexual abuse and to prevent couples and families from being broken by sexual misconduct.

One response to “Third Precept – Sexual Misconduct

  1. So many things to discuss with about what ‘sexual misconduct’ does and doesn’t mean! I believe that ppl can have ‘right conduct’ in short term relationships, that there’s a lot of different ways to express respect to sexual partners, and that sexual conduct isn’t what does or doesn’t define a ‘couple’ and what holds people together in kinship groups.

So, good to talk about what in this applies to different relationship structures! I’m a little surprised Thich Nhat Hahn would be so culture-bound in how he expresses relationships but maybe it’s more a reflection of the audience he sees himself as writing for?
